What should I consider before entering an adoption situation?

Consider whether you really want to parent a child or really want to pro-create. Adoption is about parenting a child. This child may not be like you in any number of ways, which might turn out to matter to you.

Consider how you will handle disappointment, should the birth parent(s) with whom you are matched change his/her mind and decide to parent the child. Can you persevere and enter another situation? The agency will help you address this issue.

Consider your financial options and source of funding. Sometimes babies arrive quickly after beginning the process. You don’t want to turn a situation down because you don’t have the finances resolved.

Consider whether you really have the time to go through this process. You will spend about six to eight hours with agency personnel, and you will attend at least six support group meetings, which are generally one and one-half hours in length. You may need to travel to meet the birth parent(s), and you would do this several times. You may need to take days off work to be with the birth parent(s) during the birth process and the hospital experience.
