Guatemala

1. What are the eligibility requirements?

The United States Department of State website posted the following requirements for inter-country adoption from Guatemala as of February 2007.

• Guatemala accepts married adoptive parents and single adoptive parents.
• A single or married adoptive parent must be at least 18 years of age to start the process.
• Adoptive parents over the age of 55 will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

2. What are the ages of children available to adopt?

Infants and older are available for adoption.

3. What is the time frame to complete an adoption?

We estimate five to eight months after matched with a child.  The process is approximatly one year.

Adoptive parents are not required to travel to complete the adoption. However, travel is encouraged. Traveling to the birth country is a valuable experience. The length of stay is approximately three to five days.
