1. What are the eligibility requirements?

The United States Department of State website posted the following requirements for inter-country adoption for Russia.

  • Single adoptive parents are eligible however there must be at least a 16-year age difference between the adoptive parent and adoptive child.
  • Medical conditions that may disqualify prospective adoptive parents. These include TB, active and chronic; illness of internal organs and nervous system; dysfunction of the limbs; infectious diseases; drug and alcohol addictions; psychiatric disorders; and, any disability which prevents the person from working.
  • Evidence of a stable marriage, financial stability and a care plan for the child is required.
2. What are the ages of children available to adopt?

A child must be available for a Russian domestic adoption for eight months prior to international adoption. Thus the youngest age is generally nine months.

3. What is the time frame to complete an adoption?

We estimate the average time for the adoption process is six to twelve months after all forms are submitted to Russia.

Adoptive parents will have to travel to Russian twice during the adoption process. Only one parent is required to travel on the first trip.
